Moore Shares Memories of Lucy In PBS Special

The Public Broadcasting System (PBS) and Trinklein Productions has begun production on a four-part documentary series that will "tell great stories, reveal never-before-seen images and showcase timeless clips" about television's most legendary stars and the shows they made famous. The series called "Pioneers of Television" will debut in winter/spring 2008.

Mary Tyler Moore, one of the "pioneers," will share a behind-the-scenes story about Lucy:

Mary Tyler Moore talked about how Lucille Ball hid in the studio catwalk to watch rehearsals of the "Dick Van Dyke Show." One day Lucy laughed so hard she blew her cover -- and then came down to offer Mary life-changing advice."

(Mike)LucyShowFanatic writes:

Fellow Lucy Fans:

According to Sitcoms Online, I Love Lucy will be taken off the weekday line-up and be placed on the weekends from 10am to 12noon.

Please register (if you haven't already) at TV Land Boardroom/Online and tell them that you want "I Love Lucy" on daily. We need to let them know how upset we are or else the treatment of anything Lucy will just get worse.

Thanks to LLL member LucyShowFanatic for bringing this important change to our attention! Sitcoms Online stated that "I Love Lucy" will be replaced with "Leave It To Beaver" and "The Munsters" starting March 5.

How A Cuban Revolutionized U.S. Television

An excerpt from "From Lucy To Reba: A Look at Cuban and Hollywood Relations":

Most everyone knows Desi Arnaz. That is to say, everyone knows he was the star and executive producer of "I Love Lucy." And anyone who has ever watched the show knows that he was Cuban and a talented musician.

But something that not many people know is that Arnaz played a vital part in the set up of the show at a time when the television sitcom was still being molded. Arnaz conceptualized the multi-cam setup used for filming the set, a format that would be used on virtually every sitcom from "Happy Days" to "Full House" to "Friends." Now folks, let's pause, take a breath and consider this fact: A Cuban is responsible for how American sitcoms have been filmed for more than 50 years!

Broadcasting Pioneer Dead at 98

The man responsible for bringing I Love Lucy to CBS has died. Frank Stanton, a broadcasting pioneer and CBS president for 26 years (1946-1972) died in his sleep at his Boston home yesterday. Stanton was 98.

FoxNews.com reports:

"He thought it would hurt radio," said Stanton, who took a chance on the new medium by signing a comic with untested appeal named Jackie Gleason, then nailing down a new sitcom, "I Love Lucy," which might otherwise have gone to NBC.

Lucy Apart of TVLand's 'Myths and Legends' Series

TVLand Press Release:

Wednesday, January 31, 10 p.m. - "Film Frights & Red Scares"

Was Lucille Ball ever a Communist? Did an unemployed ice cream truck driver win over $100,000 on the game show Press Your Luck by memorizing the supposedly random patterns on the game board? Is Long Island's Amityville Horror house really haunted? These are just three of the mysteries explored in this episode of TV Land Myths and Legends.

Lucy & Desi's Lost Christmas Special

One of my favorite TV websites, TVParty!, has a super article up about Lucy & Desi's Lost Christmas Special. This 1959 special has never been re-broadcast and stars the cast of "I Love Lucy" along with a gaggle of celebrities including George Murphy, Danny Thomas, Ann Sothern, Hedda Hopper and Lassie.

This Desilu Christmas special was produced and (essentially) directed by Lucille Ball herself. This is the only Desilu production I can think of that features the I Love Lucy cast members playing "themselves."

The Ricardos Are One of TV's Best Couples

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has named Ricky and Lucy Ricardo one of TV's best couples.

Real-life spouses Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz set a typical-for-its-time marriage (he worked, she was a housewife) against an atypical showbiz backdrop and were No. 1 for four years. Even her funniest schemes to get out of the house never felt demeaning to either spouse — maybe because the couple worked together off-screen as well, creating a powerful TV production empire. (See also: "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show" CBS, 1950-58, and "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet," starring Ozzie and Harriet Nelson on CBS, 1952-66).

Other couples on the unnumbered list include Darrin and Samantha Stephens, Cliff and Clair Huxtable, Homer and Marge Simpson and Jim and Margaret Anderson.
