Mattel Releasing Lucy & Ethel Two-Doll Boxed Set!

Back in January I reported that Mattel would be releasing a special two-doll "I Love Lucy" boxed set. At that time, Mattel wasn't releasing the details about which duo (Lucy and Ricky, Ethel & Fred, etc.,) would be turned into collectible Barbies. The time has finally come to reveal part of the mystery!

Lucy Ricardo & Ethel Mertz will be the dolls in Mattel's "I Love Lucy" Limited Edition Two-Doll Boxed Set!



This information was revealed in The Lucy-Desi Center Gift Shop's Spring 2007 Merchandise Guide. The guide states (image above):

It's double the fun with this new "I Love Lucy" two-doll box set-featuring Lucy and Ethel in one of their most outlandish misadventures. The episode theme of this set is still top secret, but we're taking pre-orders now to guarantee you'll be one of the first to receive this limited edition when it is released.

Your credit card will not be charged until your order is shipped to you. Orders for this special doll set will be shipped in the order they are received. Quantity will be limited, so don't delay! Pre-order yours today.

No release date for the dolls was given. To preorder the "Lucy & Ethel Two-Doll Boxed Set" (#2340) for $89.95 (plus shipping and handling) call toll-free 1-877-582-9326. As of this writing, the dolls are not available for preorder from the gift shop online yet.

Next week at the American International Toy Fair 2007 Mattel will unveil the highly anticipated, special "I Love Lucy" 2-doll set. Unfortunately, the Toy Fair is not open to the general public, but the Long Live Lucy Blog will bring you information about the dolls as it becomes available.

Amazon.com has dropped the price of Mattel's "Lucy Gets In Pictures" Barbie Doll again! You might remember that from approximately December 23-31 the doll was on sale for $19.99. On January 1, the price rose to $34.95. The price is now $19.99 for an unknown time.

'Lucy Gets Into The Top 10'

Denise Van Patten, About's Guide to Doll Collecting, recently listed her picks for the top 10 Barbie Dolls of 2006. Mattel's "Lucy Gets In Pictures" Barbie Doll came in at number 5.

Van Patten wrote:

Technically, here is another non-Barbie that made my Top 10 Barbie Dolls list! But, I couldn't resist, and the Lucy dolls are often thought of as part of the Barbie doll series.

In this episode, #116 "Lucy finally gets her big break when she snares a bit part in an MGM motion picture. Cast as a showgirl who meets death while parading down a long flight of stairs in a glamorous nightclub setting, Lucy vows to make her death scene the most unforgettable one ever recorded by Hollywood cameras." Lucy in the box is placed off-kilter, as if she is falling down the stairs. The episode first aired February 21, 1955.

This year Mattel will release a special 2 doll I Love Lucy set. This unnamed set will be 12th in the series.

Amazon.com has the "Lucy Gets In Pictures Lucy Doll" on sale for $19.99. It's regularly $39.99. I don't know when the sale will end, but as I write this post they have the dolls in stock. - Deal ended December 31.

The Associated Press reported that Lucille Ball's U.S. postage stamp released in 2001 is one of the most popular stamps ever sold. 38.7 million Lucy stamps have been bought. The number one selling stamp is the Elvis Presley Stamp with 124.1 million stamps sold.

Mattel's 10th Lucy Ricardo Doll, "Showgirl Lucy" graces the cover of the 32 page catalog.
