I will be leaving my position as Long Live Lucy's Blogger today. I don't know which member(s) Kyle will appoint to take my place, but I'm sure he or she will do an excellent job. If you are interested in participating send Kyle a private message at the forum or email him.

The blog may not be updated for awhile as this transition occurs. Please be patient.

Believe it or not, I've posted over 200 news stories since Kyle asked me to help out in August of last year. I've enjoyed writing here and will definitely miss it at times.

Desi Arnaz, Jr. In "A Wedding" Being Released On DVD In June

"A Wedding" starring Desi Arnaz, Jr. as Dino Sloan Corelli will be released on DVD on June 12th by 20th Century Fox. The film can be preordered from Amazon.com for $9.99 plus shipping and handling.

"A Wedding" also starred Carol Burnett, Geraldine Chaplin, Howard Duff and Mia Farrow. The film was released in 1978 and directed by Robert Altman. Altman died late last year of complications from cancer.

No special features for the "A Wedding" DVD have been listed. "A Wedding" was previously released on DVD as apart of The Robert Altman Collection. It's great that "A Wedding" and Desi Arnaz, Jr. Fans can now purchase this film without investing in an expensive DVD set! Did you hear that Warner Home Video?

Vivian Vance Turned Down Role In Andy Warhol Film

PR-inside.com reported that I Love Lucy's Vivian Vance turned down the role of 'Hazel Aiken' in Andy Warhol's 1977 film, "Bad." Carroll Baker took the role and won* a Saturn Award for Best Horror Actress from The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.

Warholstars.com provided this information on Vance's choice:

We had already tried to get Vivian Vance to play the lead... It was a far cry from the I Love Lucy show, but we thought Vivian Vance would be perfect for the part...

Vivian Vance thought differently. 'I'd love to do it, Andy, I really would,' she told us over dinner at La Caravelle. 'But you must understand that for all those people out there I'm still Ethel Mertz, Lucy's next-door neighbor and the nicest woman in America, and that's why I can still go into any dinner theater in the country and get paid $20,000 a week, because all my nice fans in their mink stoles want to see Ethel Mertz be nice. I hate being nice and I hate my fans and I hate their mink stoles. But I love making $20,000 a week anytime I want..."

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz Film Soundtracks Released on CD With Outtakes!

Settling-The-Score.com announced in the 'Film Music and More' section of its website that Film Score Monthly has released a CD containing the soundtracks of "The Long, Long Trailer" and "Forever, Darling."

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz starred in "The Long, Long Trailer" in 1954 and "Forever, Darling" in 1956 respectively. Both films were released on DVD in 2006.

The soundtrack is "in stock and ready to ship" according to Film Score Monthly's website, but only 3,000 copies have been made. The site also states that no soundtrack albums were ever released for these films and that "Almost all of the monaural score is included (some minor cues had to be omitted due to deterioration), including outtakes."

Lucille Ball's Children Praise Her Talents

Desi Arnaz, Jr. and his sister, Lucie, had nothing but good things to say about their famously, funny, mother, Lucille Ball, at the Fifth Annual TV Land Awards Show.

ScrippsNews reported:

On the red carpet before the show, the siblings talked about what made their mom and "I Love Lucy" so funny.

"It was written well, first of all," Lucie Arnaz said. "It's not shtick. It's believable situations, and she was so good at it."

Desi Jr. said he and his sister learned the tricks of the trade, including waiting for the laughs from a studio audience, when they played the children of Ball's character on "Here's Lucy."

The Fifth Annual TV Land Awards Show will air April 22 at 9:00 PM Eastern on TV Land. The show will repeated that same night at 11:00 PM Eastern on Nick at Nite.

Next year, Broadway Sensation Lucie Arnaz will be performing a series of concerts called "We Love Lucie" at Verizon Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

"We Love Lucie," is described as "a special show that incorporates marvelous Broadway music along with fond anecdotes of what life was like growing up with her famous parents, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz."

Lucille Ball Films Featured In Hepburn Tribute

Lucille Ball and Keenan Wynn in "Without Love"

Next month, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will be celebrating the 100th birthday of Katharine Hepburn by showing 24 of her films. Two of these films, "Stage Door" (1937) and "Without Love" (1945) co-star Lucille Ball.

"Stage Door" will be shown on Wednesday, May 9 at 8:00 PM Eastern. "Without Love" will be shown on Friday, May 11 at 1:15 AM Eastern.

This will be your last chance to see "Without Love" before it's released on DVD on Tuesday, May 29. "Stage Door" was released on DVD in 2005.

A listing of Lucille Ball's other television appearances in May will be posted next week.

Celebrity Baby Blog reported that "My Name Is Earl" star Jaime Pressly can't wait for her son, Dezi James, to arrive. Pressly is naming her son after Cuban Bandleader Desi Arnaz.

Pressly said:

And sometimes when Eric comes home from work he'll go, 'Luuuuuucy, I'm home.' One day he did it and I went 'Dezzzzzzi' and we both said, 'That's a really cool name.' And James is my father's and brother's name.

A Quill Corporation Press Release titled "There Are No More Lucy Carmichaels in Today's Offices" stated that the business professionals of today are nothing like the character Lucille Ball played on "The Lucy Show" from 1962-1968. Quill Corporation wrote:

Lucille Ball might have been the star in office of the 1960s, but today's real office stars are the trained professionals who are the backbone of the successful office.

I guess no one at Quill got the memo that "The Lucy Show" wasn't a reality show!

Back in January I reported that Mattel would be releasing a special two-doll "I Love Lucy" boxed set. At that time, Mattel wasn't releasing the details about which duo (Lucy and Ricky, Ethel & Fred, etc.,) would be turned into collectible Barbies. The time has finally come to reveal part of the mystery!

Lucille Ball's Sister-In-Law Attending Lucy-Desi Days

The Lucy-Desi Center has announced that Lucille Ball's sister-in-law, Zo Ball, will be attending Lucy-Desi Days 2007.

Other interesting tidbits:
*Bob Carroll, Jr.'s daughter, Christina, will be donating a "very, very special prop" from one of Lucy's TV series to the Lucy-Desi Center.

*A collection of Lucille Ball's handwritten letters, Christmas cards, and other personal items will be added to a new exhibit at the Lucy-Desi Museum. There will also be a rare collections of photographs with Desi Arnaz and Pepito Perez.

Lucy-Desi Days 2007 takes places May 25-27 in Jamestown, New York.

Last Monday I shared with you that Lucille Ball's 1946 film "Easy To Wed" would be included in a DVD collection devoted to Esther Williams. Here's the cover art for the collection called TCM Spotlight: Esther Williams.

"Easy to Wed" is the second film listed on the box. As previously stated "Easy To Wed" will not be sold individually on DVD. You'll have to shell out $49.92 (suggested retail price) for the entire set if you want it. TCM Spotlight: Esther Williams will be released July 17, 2007.

Grey's Anatomy Creator To Receive "Lucy" Award

Shonda Rhimes, the creator of the medical drama, Grey's Anatomy, will be presented with the Lucy Award for excellence in television at Women in Film's 2007 Crystal+Lucy Awards. The ceremony will take place June 14 at the Beverly Hilton in California. The Hollywood Reporter states:

The Lucy Awards were founded in 1994 by Joanna Kerns, Bonny Dore and Loreen Arbus and are presented in association with the Lucille Ball Estate.

The female cast members of "Grey's Anatomy" will also receive Lucy Awards.

ETonline.com reported that Carol Burnett presented the Legacy of Laughter Award to Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr. on behalf of their mother, Lucille Ball, at the 2007 TV Land Awards this past Saturday Evening. Burnett was quoted as saying these words about Lucy:

"She would do my show, I would do her show"
"She gave me a baby shower. We were very close."

Long Live Lucy Member, DEBORAHFINK (Laura), attended the awards show with her fiancee, Jimmy Garrett (Jerry Carmichael) of "The Lucy Show." Director William Asher and "I Love Lucy's" Keith Thibodeaux were also in attendance.

"I Love Lucy" Director Honored By NATAS

The Desert Sun reported that "I Love Lucy" Director, William Asher, was honored by the Pacific Southwest Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) for his extensive work in television.

The honor was received last Sunday at a luncheon held at Rancho Las Palmas Resort in Rancho Mirage. Asher along with actress Kaye Ballard, marionette designer Velma Dawson, and the late writer-producer Sidney Sheldon (represented by Barbara Eden of "I Dream of Jeannie") were named Gold Circle inductees. According to The Desert Sun, only 42 people in the United States have received this prestigious honor! The Desert Sun also noted:

More than 500 people came to show their support.

Asher, famed for directing some of Lucille Ball's best comedy sketches, filled three tables with attendees.

Congratulations to Mr. Asher!

Other Lucy connections: Kaye Ballard was a cast member of "The Mothers-In-Law," the 1967-1969 sitcom directed by Desi Arnaz. Barbara Eden appeared as Diana Jordan in the last season of "I Love Lucy"

Hawaiian Vocalist Don Ho Dead at 76

Hawaii's most celebrated musician and entertainer, Don Ho, died of heart failure on Saturday, April 14. Ho appeared as himself on many classic sitcoms, including "The Brady Bunch," "Sanford and Son" and "I Dream of Jeannie."

The Akron Beacon Journal mentioned that Lucille Ball attended Ho's concerts:

Stars such as Lucille Ball, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra were known to be in the audience for Ho's shows.

Ho's signature song was 'Tiny Bubbles.' Our condolences to the family, friends and fans of Don Ho.

Monday, they're just doing a reading. I live in NY and wanted to go. When I checked about getting tickets, they said they were sold out and there's a waiting list. I was a little disappointed, but in the long run it could be good news. Maybe if its popular they will produce it as a full fledged stage show. I'll try to keep up with any new news.

Auction To Feature Rare Lucille Ball Memorabilia

A large collection of rare, Lucille Ball Memorabilia will be up for grabs at The Old Town Auctions being held May 11-12 at the Grand Venice Hotel & Conference Center in Hagerstown, Maryland.

A press release on News-Antique's website provided this description:

A West Coast consignor who “loved Lucy” was the source for a mind-boggling 1,000-piece collection of Lucille Ball memorabilia. The collection – part I of which will be offered in the May sale – features advertising signs, toys, dolls, paper and ephemera; and “practically any Lucy-related item that was made under license,” said Spurgeon. “This includes nearly every Lucille Ball movie poster ever made – there are about 20 – promotional pieces from Desilu Studios, one of two known boxed Ricky Ricardo conga drums, and even a Ricky Jr. doll stroller, which was autographed by Keith Thibodeaux, who played Little Ricky on the TV show.”

"Easy To Wed" On DVD In July

"Easy To Wed," the 1946 romantic comedy starring Van Johnson, Esther Williams and Lucille Ball will be released on Region 1 DVD on July 17, 2007.

The film will be apart of a DVD collection devoted to 'America's Favorite Mermaid,' Esther Williams, called TCM Spotlight: Esther Williams. The boxset will include "Bathing Beauty," "On an Island With You," "Easy To Wed," "Neptune's Daughter" and "Dangerous When Wet." All the films are new to DVD and in Technicolor. Warner Home Video provided this description:

Easy To Wed

When the local paper runs an untrue story claiming an heiress (Williams) is a husband stealer, she prepares to sue for libel. So a newspaper honcho (Keenan Wynn) devises a counter scheme to compromise her image: He’ll arrange a sham wedding between his fiancée (Lucille Ball) and a newsroom Romeo (Van Johnson), send the Romeo to woo the heiress, and make the phony story come true!

An Interview With Author David C. Tucker Pt. 1

The Long Live Lucy Forum is proud to present an original interview with author David C. Tucker regarding his book The Women Who Made Television Funny: Ten Stars of 1950s Sitcoms and Lucille Ball.

1. Why did you decide to write a book about the leading ladies of 1950s sitcoms?

So much has been written about our movie history, but less about our TV heritage. I love old movies, and their stars, but I wanted to know more about the pioneering stars who made the TV sitcoms I grew up loving. I read a book about ten film actresses from the Golden Age of Movies, and that sparked an idea – I started making my own “Top Ten” list.

2. Many of the actresses in your book have passed away. Was it difficult uncovering their stories?

I was lucky enough to get interviews with two who are still very much with us – My Little Margie’s Gale Storm, and Betty White. I also interviewed people who knew or worked with these ladies, including Eve Arden’s son Doug, writer/producer Sherwood Schwartz, and others. I spent a great deal of time doing library research, and screening these actresses’ TV shows and movies. It was also very helpful to be able to collect rare magazine articles and other memorabilia on eBay.

I loved finding out some of the tidbits that I’d never heard before, such as the fact that a Lucy radio comedy was being pitched to sponsors in the mid-1940s, prior to My Favorite Husband – one that would have teamed her with actor Keenan Wynn.

3. Lucille Ball and Betty White have remained household names for over 50 years. What quality do these actresses have (or have more of) than the lesser known actresses in your book?

In Betty White’s case, I think her versatility has kept her working and in the public eye. She’s shown that she can do sitcoms, dramatic shows, game shows, talk shows, and even recently a daytime soap opera. When I asked her this question, however, her response was that she was just “the luckiest old broad on two feet”! She’s a very modest lady.

As for Lucy, I personally don’t think we’ll ever stop loving I Love Lucy. As I said in the introduction to the book, when I watch 1970s sitcoms like All in the Family, they seem to me now more dated than Lucy’s 1950s shows. The people who made I Love Lucy more or less *invented* the TV sitcom, and they’re a hard act to follow.

4. How did television viewers react to seeing Lucille Ball, an older woman, pregnant?

Though nowadays we’re quite accustomed to seeing pregnant actresses continue in their TV roles while they’re expecting, this was quite a novelty in 1952. There was a great deal of resistance on the part of CBS and the sponsor to permitting this storyline. Had I Love Lucy not been the #1 show on television at the time, they probably would have vetoed it altogether.

But viewers were so emotionally involved in the lives of the Ricardos, more so than most sitcom characters, that they responded with great affection and delight to the news. Many of them knew that, in real life, Lucy and Desi had long wanted children, and had suffered through a miscarriage before Lucie was born.

Watch that famous scene in the Tropicana when Lucy breaks the news to Ricky, even today, and see if there’s not a little moisture in your eyes by the time it’s over!

5. I've heard about Lucille Ball using a device, recommended to her by Ann Sothern,that lifted her face up. Did Ann Sothern use this device on her series? Were devices like this common among actresses back then?

Yes, both ladies, at one time or another, used such a device, as did stars like Bette Davis. Keep in mind that Hollywood is not necessarily friendly to women over a certain age, and that there is a lot of pressure on actresses, even those in comedy, to remain youthful-looking. The modern-day equivalent, perhaps, aside from plastic surgery, would be something like Botox.

In the 1960s, however, after her second sitcom ended, Ann Sothern grew tired of trying to maintain a glamorous appearance, and began delving into character roles. She allowed herself to gain some of the weight she’d been fighting in the 1950s, and made some interesting films like “Lady in a Cage.” She often said that she found such roles more challenging than leads.

6. Recently, there was an essay in Vanity Fair Magazine by Christopher Hitchens titled, "Why Women Aren't Funny."
Why do you think some men still feel this way?

Well, obviously, I don’t agree! :--) I chose to write about the women of 1950s comedy, rather than the men, because I found their work so much more intriguing.

What I gleaned from Mr. Hitchens’ essay was that he believes our society still tends to validate women for being attractive, whereas men are judged from a broader perspective. Whether or not you agree with that, it does seem to be the case that there are relatively few actors who really have a knack for comedy. Joan Davis, who starred in I Married Joan, encouraged her own daughter to pursue comedy, telling her there were already too many aspiring glamourpusses in Hollywood, but not very many good comediennes.

Did you know that Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball) of "I Love Lucy" and Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) of "The Sopranos" have something in common? Rich Heldenfels of The Akron Beacon Journal fills us in:

When thinking about those episodes -- including side plots like the completion of Christopher's horror movie -- I was reminded of an old summary of just about every episode of I Love Lucy: ``Lucy wants something.''

Lucy would take extreme, albeit comedic, steps to get what she wanted. And the following week, she was bound to want something else. And, in that vein, The Sopranos may be summed up as ``Everybody wants something, and they can't rest until they get it.''

They may want power, respect, glory, happiness. They may want someone dead. They may want to live a little longer. But not having it nags at them, and getting it makes them toss aside any moral compunctions.

Thankfully Lucy Ricardo never whacked anyone.

Columnist Puts His Health In Lucy's Hands

Syndicated columnist, Leonard Pitts Jr., declared in his most recent column that if he is ever diagnosed with cancer that he will laugh himself to death. Pitts writes:

I will ensconce myself in front of the big screen with a stack of DVDs — the "Vitameatavegamin" episode of "I Love Lucy" will be at the top, but Pryor, Cosby and Newhart will also be in there, along with "Frasier," Albert Brooks, "Borat," "The Daily Show" ... anything that has ever made me giggle will be pressed into service.

You see, 20 years ago, I read a fascinating book called "Love, Medicine and Miracles" by Dr. Bernie Siegel. It argued the restorative powers of laughter, faith, love and will in fighting even the most fearsome illnesses. I decided then that if I ever found myself on the receiving end of some grim diagnosis, Dr. Lucille Ball and the rest would be integral members of my medical team.

Pitts won the won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 2004 and is the author of Becoming Dad: Black Men and the Journey to Fatherhood.

Lucie Arnaz Performing At Copley Symphony Hall

Lucie Arnaz and Robert Klein will be appearing in "They're Playing My Song” November 9-10 at Copley Symphony Hall in San Diego, California. The program will be conducted by Marvin Hamlisch and is a part of The San Diego Symphony's 2007-08 Winter Pops Concerts. SignOnSanDiego.com stated:

Hamlisch will launch his Winter Pops concerts next season with “They're Playing My Song,” inspired by his semi-autobiographical musical comedy “They're Playing Our Song” and featuring the original stars, Lucie Arnaz and Robert Klein. During the program's first half, Arnaz (the daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz) will sing and Klein will do a comedy routine with orchestral accompaniment. After intermission, they'll appear in an updated and condensed version of the show that combined Neil Simon's script, Hamlisch's music and Carole Bayer Sager's lyrics. Opening on Broadway in 1979, it ran for 1,082 performances.

San Diego audiences will “get the best of it – it's a very happy-go-lucky show,” said Hamlisch, who is also chief pops conductor for the Pittsburgh Symphony and Washington, D.C.'s National Symphony.

The concerts will begin at 8 P.M. and tickets can be purchased by calling 619-235-0804. More information is also available at sandiegosymphony.com.

"Untouchables" DVD Contains Arnaz Intros

The Akron Beacon Journal stated that "The Untouchables" Season 1, Volume 1 DVD Set being released Tuesday, April 10 includes introductions for the series by Desi Arnaz. Rich Heldenfels of The Akron Beacon Journal reviewed the DVDs:

Besides the first 14 episodes of the series, the DVD includes a two-part telecast on Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse that began the Untouchables TV story. The two-parter was later re-edited into a single piece for movie-theater distribution under the title The Scarface Mob, and that's the way it appears here. As a bonus, the DVD includes the introductions for the Playhouse telecasts by producer Desi Arnaz and narrator-newsman Walter Winchell.

"The Untouchables" starred Robert Stack as Eliot Ness and was the first dramatic series created at Desilu Productions.

"Indian Show" Guest Star Passes Away

Here's some news that slipped passed us!

Carol Richards who played Juanita in 'The Indian Show' (episode #59 of "I Love Lucy") died March 16 of kidney failure in Vero Beach, Florida. Richards was 84 and best known for providing the singing voices of actresses Cyd Charisse and Vera-Ellen. She recorded a number of songs with Bing Crosby (including "Silver Bells") and sang with Desi Arnaz's Band. According to The Citizens' Voice, Ms. Richards' family will be holding a public party in her honor in Vero Beach in June.

Our belated condolences to the family, friends and fans of Carol Richards.

"Job Switching" A Way Of Life For Candy Makers

What is it really like to work in a chocolate factory? For workers at Morley Candy Makers Factory, it's more like "Job Switching" (episode #39 of "I Love Lucy") than we thought. The Detroit Free Press reports:

A better way to picture this factory is to think of that scene from the 1950s sitcom "I Love Lucy," when Lucy is working in the chocolate factory, gets behind and starts eating the chocolate off the conveyor belt.

For kicks, some of the workers at Morley staged a scene a couple of years ago like the "Lucy" one and took a photo that is for sale in the store.

If you don't know about Lucy, just imagine tens of thousands of tiny bunnies rolling off the line. Just don't expect to find any Oompa-Loompas.

Lucy and Ethel Peep Style

Susan Sessions created an "I Love Lucy"-inspired diorama for a Marshmallow Peeps® Diorama Contest in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Sessions' diorama, "I Love Peeps," was the winner in the adult division. Amy Whitesall of The Ann Arbor News wrote:

"I love Lucy and I love Peeps,'' said Sessions, a technical writer from Saline who's between jobs. "Everyone seemed to know the episode with the chocolate factory. It seems to be a universal thing.''

Sessions said she went through four boxes of Peeps, searching for marshmallow chicks with just the right eye alignment and facial expression.

"There were some that looked like the product of first cousins marrying,'' Sessions said.

She made the hats first, convinced that the headwear would make or break the diorama's success. When she put the hats on the Peeps, Sessions says, she just started laughing.

"I have to tell you, it is pretty difficult to dress up a Peep,'' Sessions said. "They have no shape. They're like a blob.''

Tom Watson's Radio Show Ending

Tom Watson announced in the April 2 issue of his newsletter, Still in Love with Lucy, that "Star Notes" has ended. "Star Notes" was a weekly Internet radio show devoted to actress Lucille Ball that featured a special guest each week.

Sadly, Saturday's show was our last "Star Notes" broadcast for Shokus Internet Radio. Because of differences with management, we have withdrawn from further association with the station.

Lucy Ricardo Voted "Greatest TV Character of All Time"

I Love Lucy's Lucy Ricardo has been voted "Greatest TV Character of All Time" thanks to a poll conducted by The News & Observer. Staff writer, Matt Ehlers, stated:

Ricardo, whose "I Love Lucy" is one of the most enduring shows in the history of the medium, clobbered Jack Bauer of "24" in the championship round of our bracket-style competition.

Although the outcome was perhaps unsurprising, the margin certainly was. Of the more than 900 votes included in our final tally, Ricardo was picked as the winner on 273 of them. Barney Fife, the home-state folk hero who finished as champion on the second-most brackets, managed only 99.

Lucie Arnaz, will be performing what's being called a “pull out all the stops” grand finale on May 27 in honor of her mother, Lucille Ball, at Lucy-Desi Days 2007.

Lucie Arnaz In Concert—A Daughter’s Tribute will be "a heart-touching evening of music and song featuring a very special video compilation," stated The Lucy-Desi Center earlier today. The center also stated that Arnaz will be bringing in musicians from Los Angeles, Texas and Florida for the grand finale.

Michael Stern, who Lucille Ball called her number one fan, is writing a book about his experiences with the first lady of comedy. The book is called I Had A Ball and doesn't have a set release date yet.

New Musical Inspired by Lucy and Desi's Courtship

Playbill News has reported that Jenn Colella will take part in a free reading of the new musical, Dance With Me. Dance With Me was inspired by the story of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz's courtship. Its description reads:

"Escaping the bloodshed of his native Island, a young Cuban boy sets sail on a turbulent journey that leads him all the way to Hollywood and into the arms of a fiery, redheaded movie star named Lucille Ball. Can these two star-crossed lovers blaze a path that defies Hollywood and history to be together?"

Other members of the cast include Tony Yazbeck as Desi, Lynne Wintersteller as Dede, Michelle Blakely as Carole Lombard and Gerrianne Raphael as Hattie.

Actors Sammy Ogg and David Stollery will be attending Lucy-Desi Days 2007 stated The Lucy-Desi Center earlier today. Ogg and Stollery are best known for their roles as Jimmy and Timmy Hudson, the mischievous twins that Lucy Ricardo babysat in episode 14 ('The Amateur Hour') of "I Love Lucy." Remember when they wanted to burn poor Lucy at the stake?

Ogg and Stollery will be the special guests of honor at the “I Love Lucy” Legend Event taking place on Sunday, May 27. The Lucy-Desi Center also stated:

Neighbors Discover Lucy Connection

Tom Palliser and his neighbors in Rincon Heights, Arizona unearthed a forgotten piece of history when they discovered that actress Lucille Ball once lived in their neighborhood. The Arizona Daily Star reports:

While Palliser and his neighbors were researching the history of the neighborhood, they found out Lucille Ball and John Denver were involved with the neighborhood. Ball lived in the 300 block of North Park Avenue, though Palliser did not (know) when she lived in the neighborhood.

Rincon Heights, a municipality of Tucson, contains about 650 homes and is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Tucson.

The Lucy-Desi Center has revealed that Vivian Vance's sister will be the very special guest for Vance's tribute during Lucy-Desi Days 2007. Here's the scoop:

Later, you can come aboard the Summerwind for a special Vivian Vance Treasure Chest Boat Cruise hosted by Vivian Vance’s sister—flying in direct from Albuquerque for the weekend! (Yes, Vivian Vance’s sister! This once-in-a lifetime opportunity makes the trip to Jamestown a “must” this year!)

The Lucy-Desi Center has announced plans to honor actress Vivian Vance (1909-1979) with a tribute at Lucy-Desi Days 2007. The center isn't releasing all the details yet, but they stated that there will be a "very special guest" for Vance's tribute on Saturday, May 26.

Vivian Vance is best known for her roles as Ethel Mertz on 'I Love Lucy' and 'The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour' and as Vivian Bagley on 'The Lucy Show.' Her last appearance with Lucille Ball was in the 1977 TV special, 'Lucy Calls The President.'

Lucy-Desi Days 2007 is a 40+ event festival being held from May 25-27 in Jamestown, New York (Lucille Ball's hometown).

The Miami Herald stated that the Fontainebleau, a hotel in Miami that Lucille Ball favored, is being revamped for $500 million.

Though once a favorite retreat for Frank Sinatra and Lucille Ball (not to mention James Bond in Goldfinger), the hotel designed by famed architect Morris Lapidus lost its luster in the 1970s.

MocoNews.net's Entertainment Reporter, David Kaplan, stated on March 23 that "CBS Interactive and Sprint are teaming up to offer live mobilecasts and mobisodes on Sprint TVSM."

The ad-supported programming (ugh!) will include clips of "The Brady Bunch," "Survivor," "The Late Show With David Letterman," all the "CSI Shows" and "I Love Lucy." Full episodes of the drama series "Jericho" will also be available. Hopefully full episodes of "I Love Lucy" will be offered in the future.

On March 15, USA Today listed their picks for TV's most ageless and boisterous beauties. The list was unnumbered, but Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance, were the first ladies named for their work in "I Love Lucy." Some of the other boisterous beauties on the list were Mary Tyler Moore, Bonnie Franklin, Candice Bergen and Delta Burke.

Back in February we reported that Lucille Ball's children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz, Jr., would be attending the The Fifth Annual TV Land Awards Show in her honor. At the time we weren't sure what they would be doing, but now thanks to the latest TV Land Press Release we now know that the duo will be receiving Ball's "Legacy of Laughter Award."

The Fifth Annual TV Land Awards Show - Hosted by Kelly Ripa, The TV Land Awards is television's only show where contemporary stars come out to honor Classic TV icons. Among this year's honorees include: Roots,which will feature the reunion of several cast members in honor of the epic's 30th Anniversary; Lucille Ball, whose Legacy of Laughter Award will be accepted by her children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz, Jr.; The Brady Bunch, which will be feted with the Pop Culture Award in an on-stage reunion of the cast; and Hee Haw, which will be honored with the Entertainer Award. Other honorees and presenters will be announced by TV Land shortly. Airdate: April 22, 2007.

What did you watch this past St. Patrick's Day? Viewers of Chicago-based ME-TV were treated (or tricked?) to a marathon of classic black-and-white TV shows shown in a green tint. LLL Member, (Josh) DizzyArnizzy, writes:

A local station airs two episodes of "We Love Lucy" (half-hour versions of the "Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour") once a week, as part of a "Saturday Night/Black and White" block of classic shows.

Well, tonight they decided to get creative for St. Patrick's Day and add a green tint to every black and white show, including LDCH's "Lucy Goes to Mexico."

The Honolulu Advertiser reported that the Romance Festival featuring Lucie Arnaz and other visiting artists sold poorly at the box office. No worries! Organizers are already planning next year's festival and hope the artistic buzz from this year's festival and tourism will generate more revenue the next time around.

Lucie's 'Little Ring' Story

Lucie Arnaz shares her memories of the famous "Lucy Meets The Burtons" episode of Here's Lucy:

"I'll never forget this week," Arnaz says.

"Not because of the Burtons or that ring. But because this was the week I got engaged to Phil Vandervort. He gave me this beautiful marquis-shaped ring with a tiny little emerald and little baby diamonds all around it, which was the biggest thing that had happened to me. Little did I know that the Burtons were the biggest thing to happen on that set. I ran down there to show off the ring and tell everyone I got engaged. Mom tried to introduce me to Richard and Liz, but I just had to make my announcement. Everyone on the set applauded, and Liz came over to me, grabbing my hand, she said: 'Let me see the ring.' Unfortunately, she grabbed for the ring with the hand that had HER ring. I was totally upstaged. My ring was a puddle, and hers was an Olympic-sized swimming pool. She was very gracious. She tried to make me feel as if I had the nicest ring in the world. She also told me to wash all my jewelry with toothpaste. I do it to this day."

Recent celeb visitors have included Goldie Hawn, singer John Oates of Hall & Oates fame and actress Natalie Portman. The springs' most-famous regular visitor for years was Lucille Ball, who loved to ski and had a condo in Snowmass, Colo., just outside Aspen.

The retrospective "The Best of Three's Company" hosted by television icon, Lucille Ball, will be aired as apart of TV Land's Three's Company 30th Anniversary 24-Hour Marathon.

The 1-hour special (shown in two parts in syndication) originally aired on May 18, 1982. Lucy admired John Ritter and said she liked "Three's Company" because "it doesn't try to change the world or solve any major problems; all it does is make us laugh and forget our own cares."

Tune in Saturday, March 17 at 8:00 and 8:30 PM Eastern or Sunday, March 18 at 3:00 and 3:30 PM Eastern to see parts 1 and 2 of this special. The special can also be viewed in its original 1-hour form on the "Three's Company" Season Six DVD Set (yellow box).

Just when we thought things couldn't get any sweeter, what with "The Final Seasons" being released tomorrow, "Without Love" in May, "The Lucille Ball Collection" in June and the "I Love Lucy Movie" before Christmas - DizzyArnizzy (Josh) brought us more exciting DVD news!

On May 1, Genius Productions, Inc. will release
"I Love Lucy - Lucy's Really Lost Moments." This closed captioned, 71 minute long, DVD will retail for $14.95. DizzyArnizzy researched to find out what was on this new release. He writes:

Well, I just found a description from MoviesUnlimited.org:

I Love Lucy - Lucy's Really Lost Moments

Not anymore! Share some laughs with the First Lady of Television with this ultra-rare compilation of footage starring the legendary Lucille Ball. Includes an "I Love Lucy" episode guest-starring Bob Hope; a Westinghouse special featuring Lucy; an episode of the game show "I've Got a Secret," in which Lucy appears with panelist Johnny Carson; and a rarely seen TV pilot starring Lucy.

This is the third home video release of the Westinghouse Special with Viv and Bill (unless this DVD will include the "Westinghouse Desilu Revue" (doubt it) or "Ellis In Freedomland", where Lucy is the voice of a washing machine).

The pilot is probably that 1960 "Victor Borge Comedy Hour", where Lucy takes part in the airplane skit with Gale (a clip from this was included on the "Funny World of Lucy" Vol. 2 DVD)

As for the "I've Got a Secret" episode, this will probably be a NEW "Lucy" appearance to DVD. The episode that will *most likely* be included on this set aired February 15th, 1960...Lucy was promoting "Wildcat" at the time. Actress Betty Hutton Dead At 86

Actress Betty Hutton, best known for her roles in "Annie Get Your Gun," "The Greatest Show on Earth" and "The Perils of Pauline" passed away today at the age of 86.

Desilu was responsible for Hutton's short-lived sitcom "The Betty Hutton Show" in 1959. Turner Classic Movies will be pre-empting its previously scheduled programming on Thursday to run a mini-festival of Ms. Hutton's films. Here is the schedule:

I Love Lucy Movie in the Fall! - Update!

As reported earlier today, the "I Love Lucy" Movie will be released on DVD this fall! Long Live Lucy member, DizzyArnizzy (Josh), has an update on this story for us:

On "Star Notes", Tom Watson mentioned "The 'I Love Lucy' Movie" will probably be released in late September or early October...Gregg Oppenheimer and some others are currently searching through the CBS/Paramount vaults to find some bonus features for the DVD release.

"The 'I Love Lucy' Movie" had originally been planned to be released as part of the "Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" DVD set, as a bonus feature. However, for the producers to add the "ILL Movie" to the DVD release, there would have been a two month delay for the DVD release of the LDCH set. So instead, it was decided that the "ILL Movie" would have its own DVD release.

Tom said the "Movie" release will definitely be out between now and Christmas.

Lucy fans everywhere are excited about purchasing "I Love Lucy: The Final Seasons 7, 8 & 9" (a.k.a. "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour") when it's released on Tuesday, March 13. It's hard not to get excited now that DVD reviews and Lucy mentions are starting to pour in!

The March 13th issue of Good Housekeeping's Quick & Simple Magazine (in stores now) features this blurb and trivia quiz about "I Love Lucy: The Final Seasons 7,8 & 9" being released on DVD:

Mike Restaino of DVDFile.com , who doesn't seem to be a devout Lucille Ball Fan, gave the season set a favorable review and seemed impressed with the set's special features:

As with other seasons of I Love Lucy on DVD, this set comes with some nice bonuses. The uncut version of Lucy Takes a Cruise to Havana is hilarious (though not having much knowledge of the broadcast version, I’m not sure what is new here), and the color set footage of the all-too-familiar I Love Lucy shooting locale is a trip. (Can you guess what color the walls are painted?) We also get a few enjoyable – if slight – deleted scenes, a blooper reel, the original openings and closings to the show, some original cast commercials and a promotion spot, some animation from the show’s first airings, a few song selections (that take you to some of this set’s better musical moments), and some production notes and guest cast information.

Lucie Loves Hawaii, Lucy Loves Ellen?

Lucie Arnaz shared her thoughts about Hawaii with The Star Bulletin:

"First of all, I love Hawaii more than anything in my life," said Arnaz from her snow-covered home in upstate New York. "I've been there many, many, many, many, many times -- our honeymoon, our anniversaries, brought our kids there many times, my parents brought me there when I was little -- Hawaii is my own special oasis on this planet."

Since Arnaz's parents were Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball, the trips were a way of escaping the Hollywood pressure cooker.

"We had some of the happiest times of my life in Hawaii," she recalled, her voice going quiet. "It was before my parents were divorced and the time when they were at their happiest. No arguing, no work to take them away, and they just loved being there and with each other. My best memory of pure joy.

"As I got older, and my mom was married to somebody else and my dad was married to somebody else, still, if anyone said they were going to Hawaii, I would get tears in my eyes. The plane would land in Honolulu, and I would start to weep. ... You'd step off the plane and smell the flowers -- your scent memory is so strong -- every pore in my body remembers it."

Arnaz will be performing "The Most Romantic Songs Ever Written" with Nick and Nina Clooney and Brian Stokes Mitchell on Thursday, March 8 at Hawaii Theatre. For tickets call 591-2211.

In bizarre news, Starpulse News Blog reported last week that Lucille Ball approved of Ellen Degeneres hosting the Oscars.

In a seance staged by psychic to the stars Kenny Kingston after the Oscars on Sunday night, a number of dead stars reached out to their late pal - and many had nothing but high praise for the way DeGeneres hosted the Academy Awards.

Kingston says, "Lucille Ball was particularly complimentary about Ellen and told me she thought Ellen should be the permanent host of the Oscars."

But it was the bombshell that was to follow that floored Kingston, who was once hired to guide Bette Davis and Marilyn Monroe spiritually.

He adds, "I wasn't expecting it, but Lucille Ball revealed that Ellen was her own mother's mother two lifetimes ago. It seems the roles were reversed in a past life. That might explain why Ellen and her mother, Betty, who often appears on her TV show, are so close."

It's nice to know you get TV in Heaven. Do you get commercials? Hmmm....

I Love Lucy Movie in the Fall!

Yesterday, on Tom Watson's internet radio show, "Star Notes" (broadcasting from shokusradio.com, Dann Cahn, "I Love Lucy"/"The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour"'s film editor, was the special guest. I was only able to listen to a short part of the episode, but from what I did hear, Dann announced that "The 'I Love Lucy' Movie" WILL BE RELEASED THIS FALL, BEFORE CHRISTMAS!! Dann rediscovered this "lost" film back in '01.

Gregg Oppenheimer, who produced the ILL DVDs (Seasons 1-6), is working on this DVD release. (BTW -- Gregg told me a few years back, I believe around May of 2004, that he was restoring this film, preparing it for a DVD release and/or a TV network airing, so I have been expecting this release for years.)

If you recall, "The 'I Love Lucy' Movie" was planned to be released as a "Bonus Feature" on the upcoming "Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour"/"I Love Lucy" Final Seasons 7-9 DVD release, but it was eventually decided to not include this film as a feature on that set. I'm glad this film will be getting its own single DVD release; it certainly deserves one...PLUS, it gives us Lucy fans a chance to see more "Lucy" rare extras/bonus features.

I will try to tune into the rerun of the radio show ("Star Notes") tomorrow on shokusradio.com at 4-6 PM Eastern Time, to post more details about this release.

For those who haven't heard, Tom Watson, Lucille Ball historian, president of We Love Lucy Fan Club, and owner www.lucyfan.com has recently started a new Internet Radio Show, called "Star Notes", which airs LIVE every Saturday from 4-6 PM Eastern Time on www.shokusradio.com. Rick Carl, Illustrator of "The Official 'I Love Lucy' Paper Dolls Book", co-hosts the show.

Each week, Tom has trivia contests, talks about the latest "Lucy" news, airs rare "Lucy" audio clips from her shows and radio appearances, and has special "Lucy celebrity" guests for every show (this past Saturday, for Episode #3, the guest was ILL film editor Dann Cahn). Guests on previous episodes included: Marilyn Borden (of ILL's of "Teensy and Weensy" fame), Jimmy Garrett (who played Jerry Carmichael on "The Lucy Show"), Wanda Clark (Lucy's personal secretary), and Frank Gorey (Lucy's driver, who also has a book in the works about his time with Lucy!!).
